Large and showy herbaceous perennial, native to Southern and Eastern North America. Found in swampy areas and along streams, prefering part shade. Growing between 1-5ft. (30-150cm) tall with prolific amounts of long-lived white flowers. A favourite medicine of the First Nations who used the dried leaf and flowering tops as a remedy for colds, flu and fever. Medical research suggests that the use of the herb enhances the immune system and is regarded as a mild tonic in moderate doses. In large doses it is emetic and purgative. (Caution: contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids; not recommended for long term use.)
