Rhizomatous, sunflower-like, herbaceous, perennial, native primarily to mountainous areas of southern Europe, the Ukraine, the Balkans, the Caucusus and Turkey. Bold, heart-shaped leaves and single large, daisy-like flowers with yellow feathery petals and golden centres on branching stems. Prefers part shade but tolerates full sun as long as soils are kept moist. Used in traditional Romanian medicine for the treatment of some inflammatory diseases (including rheumatism, liver and urinary disorders) remedies administrated both by internal or external means. Known also as Heart-leaved Ox eye, Ox-eye daisy, Yellow Ox-eye.
